Our after school has open enrollment Monday - Thursdays. Your child is invited to come any day to get homework support, or have opportunities to join exciting enrichment classes.
Mrs. Mitchener, our Math Specialist, works with 2nd and 3rd graders on Tuesdays at 2:30 and 4th-6th graders on Thursdays at 2:30, as well. Furthermore, Ms. Terry works with students who need extra support in reading on Wednesdays at 12:30-2:00pm.

Reading and Math Specialist

Parents of Rio del Mar,
Our Math Specialist, Tiffany Mitchener, is helping out our after school program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm in Room 23. Please e-mail me at: martin_sweet@pvusd.net if you would like your child to get some extra support.

Rebecca Terry is our new Reading Specialist at the after school program on Wednesdays. Students in 2nd and 3rd are invited on Wednesdays from 12:20-1:00 in Room 2. 4th-6th graders will be able to work with her from 1:15-2:10. E-mail me if interested. She is also teaching the Lego Engineering class coming on Friday, September 30th.

Finally, 5th graders, and students struggling in math are invited to utilize some effective software in our computer lab on Mondays-Thursdays from 2:30-3:00pm. Wednesdays-12:20-1pm. The program is called Successmaker and it is a challenging and fun type of software that advances students from where they are at, to new high levels.

After School Programs Resumes

Dear Parents,
Rio del Mar Elementary School's After School Program will begin on Monday, August 22nd. Our program will run from 2:10 – 4:25 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Restructured-Day Wednesdays the program will run until 2:05 p.m. As in the past, the primary purpose of this program is to help students with homework and provide academic support and interventions for students that are falling behind grade level standards and who may struggle with the CST Testing.

The program will continue to consist of an hour of tutorial/homework support for students who are in 2nd - 6th grades. If your child completes all of their homework they will participate in an hour of enrichment activities to support student learning. Students are to be honest regarding finishing their homework. If they are not, they will lose fun enrichment class opportunities for two weeks. Enrichment activities will consist of: Sports Leagues, Rock Bands, Guitar, Computers, Piano, Chess, Ceramics, Arts and Crafts, Cartooning, African Drumming, Games and possibly Choir. Rio’s After School is an open enrollment program and this means that your child may come any day we are in session, or enroll throughout the year.

*For those students who take the bus: there will be a free after school bus that will pick up the students at 4:25 p.m.on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no bus provided on our Restructured Wednesdays (short days). As a result, students will need to be picked up on Wednesdays. If you have a transportation problem/concern please call: 728-6324.

**Please remember to pick up your child promptly each day at 4:25 p.m. After three warnings for getting picked up late, your child will be required to take the free after school bus home.

*There will be no after school program on Fridays or during Parent/Teacher Conferences in October. Snacks and drinks will be provided each day. Keep an eye out for all-calls at home for new classes and holiday weeks because there will be days that we will not be in session.

*When school begins, please send a check for $220 for each child to attend Rio’s After School Program. This fee helps pay for a Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, staff, supplies, curriculum, books, equipment, prizes and much more. Scholarships are available for students in need. This one time fee is a small sum compared to the hundreds of dollars you would pay at other programs each month. Checks are preferred and they should be made out to the RDM Parent Alliance.

Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering a new Life Lab Garden enrichment class taught by 5th grade teacher Mr.Todd Kitch.
Description:
The students will have the opportunity to work in the Rio del Mar Life Lab garden. Students will plant seeds and bulbs, water and pull weeds, dig holes, move soil around in a wheelbarrow, eat the vegetables and so much more! The class will take place in Room 11 and the Rio del Mar garden above the upper playground. There will be no charge for this class! Students in 3rd through 6th grade will able to participate.

READING INTERVENTION SPECIALIST CLASS RESUMES

After School Ceramics Class
Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering another Ceramics enrichment class taught by Claudia Stevens. Claudia is an experienced Spectra Art teacher through the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz.
Description:
This class will learn the basic forms of ceramics and have the opportunity to have their projects fired and glazed. Students who have participated in previous classes may enroll because new lessons and projects will be taught. There will be a $50 charge for the teacher, supplies and kiln fee. The extra fees are covered by the After School. Students in 2nd through 6th grade will able to participate. Please write the check to the Parent Alliance.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Rio del Mar is starting a new school newspaper and we are looking for a dynamic news team. Coverage will range from school events and people, to local, national and world news of interest to students. The name of the paper and content will be student driven and possible sections might include happenings on campus, book, comics, music or movie reviews, advice columns, editorials, interviews of teachers, students or staff and much more.
We’ll be meeting in the Computer Lab on Wednesdays starting February 2nd from 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. This is going to be an exciting project and all fourth through sixth grades students interested in writing and/or photography are encouraged to join. We’ll need reporters, editors, computer whizzes and artists to make an amazing Rio del Mar Newspaper. There is no charge for this exciting new class. Michelle Deering, our new librarian, will be leading this dynamic news team.

RIO DEL MAR TALENT SHOW

Lights, camera and action… Does Rio have talent? Well, when school resumes in January, we will be holding auditions for the first Rio del Mar Talent Show on Wednesday, January 19th at 12:30pm. The talent show will be available for all 2nd-6th graders who would like to show off their “pro-skills” in front of a school assembly in the spring. From the auditions a group of judges along with Mr. Sweet, will select the top 15 acts to perform in the talent show. Parents are welcome to attend the auditions.
Here are just a few ideas that you could try out: dance, card tricks, recite poetry, imitate someone famous, skits, standup comedy, instrument, recite a poem, or sing an orginal/cover song, magic, juggling, and demonstrations. The ideas are endless. You have the entire winter break to prepare for the auditions. Below is a permission slip that your parents need to sign along with the talent you will be sharing. This permission slip will be due on Friday, January 14th.

AFRICAN DRUMMING

AFTER SCHOOL AFRICAN DRUMMING ENRICHMENT CLASS
Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering another class entitled African Drumming with Ibou N’Gom. This class will be open to the first 15 2nd-6th grade students who return this form to Mr. Sweet with their parent’s permission. The class will take place on Mondays from 3:30-4:30pm. You may go to the after school. There will be a charge of $50 for this class, which is under $10 per lesson. Please make the check out to the Parent Alliance. This class has limited enrollment because teaching drums requires a smaller class in order to maximize our time. This class is an 8–week course, so attendance is important. Also, please make sure your child practices at home to apply the skills they have learned. Djembes will be provided.
Description: A hands-on experience of West African drumming or dance/drumming.Drum: Students learn hand-drumming techniques, including tone, bass slap and interlocking multi-rhythmic structures. Ibou has a set of student-sized drums and percussion instruments that he will bring to you!

*When school begins, please send a check for $220 for each child to attend Rio’s After School Program. This fee helps pay for a Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, staff, supplies, curriculum, books, equipment, prizes and much more. Scholarships are available for students in need. This one time fee is a small sum compared to the hundreds of dollars you would pay at other programs each month. Checks are preferred and they should be made out to the RDM Parent Alliance.

RIO ROCK BAND AUDITIONS

Dear Parents,
After the huge success of the Rio Rockers, Yellfire and The Exceeders, Rio del Mar will be hosting auditions for a new group of rockers. The goal of this Rock Band is to give students a shot at being in a band and to experience the thrill of performing REAL songs in front of an audience. In fact, we will have an assembly at school and at least one performance out in the community. If your child auditions and makes the band, there will be a $100 fee to be in the band for the 10-week program. If your child enjoys the experience and wishes to continue, the band may continue through the school year for two more sessions. There are scholarships available for those in need.

Our auditions for 2nd-6th Graders will take place Wednesday, September 1st in the Multi- Purpose Room starting at 2:30 p.m. Each child will need to come with some song, or part of a song that they will be sharing. I will also ask simple questions about their understanding of basic music theory, depending on their instrument. There will be a male and a female vocalist, bass, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums and keyboards in this new band. All students who are interested are encouraged to come, even if they have never even played before. Parents, of course, are invited to come and watch. Make sure that they bring their instrument tuned and ready to go. Drums, a keyboard and a sound system will be provided. The main things we will be looking for is rhythm, basic skills and students who are willing to practice, practice and then practice some more.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Rio del Mar is starting a new school newspaper and we are looking for a dynamic news team. Coverage will range from school events and people, to local, national and world news of interest to students. The name of the paper and content will be student driven and possible sections might include happenings on campus, book, comics, music or movie reviews, advice columns, editorials, interviews of teachers, students or staff, comics and much more.
We’ll be meeting in the library on Wednesdays starting January 27th from 2:05 to 3:30 p.m. This is going to be an exciting project and all fourth through sixth grades students interested in writing and/or photography are encouraged to join. We’ll need reporters, editors, computer whizzes and artists to make an amazing Rio del Mar Newspaper. There is no charge for this exciting new class. LEGO ROBOTIC CLASS DESCRIPTION

Engineering 1 (E1) - Students grades 3-8 will learn by doing! Working with a partner, students will cooperatively build and modify machines exhibiting basic engineering principles. Course uses industrial machines to cover the concepts of gears and gear ratios, simple machines, structures, forces in motion and more and is capped off with a final project.

Vehicle Engineering (VE) – An exciting class where kids build 13 different vehicles capped off with a final project. Some of these vehicles haven’t been invented in the “real” world yet! Vehicles include everyday vehicles, concept cars, construction machines and more, to cover gearing and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, friction and forces in motion, and aerodynamics. Working with partners students will cooperatively build and modify machines exhibiting basic engineering principles. Appropriate for ages 8 to 12 years.

BATTLE BOTS (BB)- Students, ages 8 and up, learn to design and build their own motorized battle vehicles that battle demolition derby style. Students will try to flip, push, or smash their opponent’s battle vehicles. Brain over brawn through applied physics. Lessons demonstrate the use of mechanical lifts, nets, drills, ramps and more to disable or overcome other bots.

MONDAYS- Starting on November 30th at 2-2:30pm and 3:30-4:25pm-TALENT SHOW CLASS-Students will have the opportunity come up with an individual, or group activity to showcase their talent in a school-wide Rio del Mar Talent Show coming in the Spring. During this time students will practice their performance on stage with sound and get support from Yolanda Beaudoin, an enrichment teacher and camp director at Kruz Kidz.

CHESS CLUB-Come to Mr. Sweet's class for some serious chess competition and skills instruction in Room 12 from 3:30-4:25. Tournaments will be scheduled in the spring.

BEGINNING GUITAR CLASS

Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering another class entitled Introduction to Guitar on Wednesdays. Mr. McMillan will be teaching this class in Room 10 and it is intended for children who have not taken guitar before. This class will be open to the first ten 2nd-6th grade students who return this form to Mr. Sweet in Room 12 with their parent’s permission. There will be a charge of $75 for this class, which is under $10 per lesson. Please make the check out to the Parent Alliance. This class has limited enrollment because teaching guitar requires a smaller class in order to maximize our time. This class is an 8–week course, so attendance is important. Also, please make sure your child practices at home to apply the skills they have learned. Please bring only acoustic/classical guitars.

INTERMEDIATE GUITAR ENRICHMENT CLASS

Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering an Intermediate Guitar starting Wednesday, December 2nd in Room 12. In order to enroll in this class, your child needs to have had some guitar instruction prior to this. This class has limited enrollment because teaching guitar requires a smaller class in order to maximize our time. This will be a 8-week course. Please bring the guitar by in the morning on the day of the lesson, or they can bring it with them when the class begins. I have a couple extra guitars if your child does not have one. It is important for your child to practice each week to apply the new skills that were learned. Please bring acoustic guitars only and have your child tune their guitars prior to class.

Rio Rockers, Yellfire and The Exceeders!

Rio del Mar is fortunate to have three rock bands this year! The Rio Rockers will continue to add to their musical repertoire this year with four great songs by U2, The Cars, Led Zeppelin and Green Day. They will be performing in the community in the coming months ahead at Aptos High for a "Generations' Performance to benefit our high school's performing arts program on Saturday, October 24th. They will also join the Wild Rovers on Friday, December 18th for a big show at Don Quixote's in Felton.

A new band was recently formed with students ranging from 3rd through 6th grade. I was proud of all the students who tried out this year for the band. It takes a LOT of courage to stand up in front of everybody and give it your best. I was especially proud of three students in the new band who tried out last year, but didn't make it. They set a great example for the rest of the school to practice, practice and never give up! This new band is going to choose their name this Friday. They will be performing at a school assembly in December along with a couple of performances in the community.

Finally, I am happy to announce that I have added a new music teacher, Matthew Pinck, who has a variety of experience in Santa Cruz teaching instruments and leading youth rock bands. He will be taking over the helm of the Yellfire Band with all its members returning. These rock stars will also be performing in a winter school assembly and in the community in coming months.

Keep your eyes out and ears open for some amazing youth talent in music this coming year!

Dear Parents,
Rio del Mar Elementary School's After School Program will begin on Monday, August 17th. Our program will run from 2:05 – 4:25 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Restructured-Day Tuesdays the program will run until 2:05 p.m. The primary purpose of this program is to help students with homework and provide academic support and interventions for students that are falling behind grade level standards.

The program will continue to consist of an hour of tutorial/homework support for students who are in 2nd - 6th grades. If your child completes all of their homework they will participate in an hour of enrichment activities to support student learning. Students are to be honest regarding finishing their homework. If they are not, they will lose fun enrichment class opportunities for two weeks. Enrichment activities will consist of: Sports Leagues, Rock Bands, Guitar, Computers, Piano, Chess, Ceramics, Arts and Crafts, Actor's Theater, African Drumming, Games and more! Rio’s After School is an open enrollment program and this means that your child may come any day we are in session.

*For those students who take the bus: there will be a free after school bus that will pick up the students at 4:25 p.m. There will be no Watsonville stops this year and the last stop will be in La Selva. If you have a transportation problem/concern please call: 728-6324.

THE RIO ROCKERS

Dear Parents,
This past weekend our school band, The Rio Rockers, performed at Britannia Arms in Aptos. There was a huge turnout and they certainly rocked the house! I am really excited to get another band together with new rockers who were inspired by the first group.
This coming Friday we will be having tryouts for the second Rio Rocker Band that will be forming in the coming weeks. Please encourage your child to try out even if they are nervous. If your child is interested, please have them come with their instrument and they will perform/sing their song on the stage. I will have the drums, a bass, an electric guitar and amps for those who do not have their own.
I will be looking for one male vocalist, one female vocalist, a bass player, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, a keyboard player and a drummer.

Where: Rio del Mar Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room
When: 2:05 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13th. *If we run out of time, we'll continue the following Friday. Once the band is chosen, we will meet every Friday from 2:00-3:30 for 10 weeks.
Who: any Rio del Mar 2nd - 6th grade student that is interested
Why: Because music is desperately needed in schools!

Rio's Rock Band

Dear Parents,
Our after school program will be hosting auditions for two real rock bands that
will learn and perform 3-5 songs in a ten-week session. This is NOT a video
game. Each session the two bands will divide up with their instructors and learn
their individual parts for the songs that we will be doing. This means that the
first half of each session the two drummers will go with Emma Littlefield to
learn the drum parts, the vocalists and rhythm guitarists will go with me to
learn their parts, and the bassists and lead guitarists will learn from Ryan
Zash and Devin Avey, two members in my band, The Wild Rovers. The second half of
each session we will all come back together to perform the songs as a band in
the Multi Purpose Room.

The goal of this experimental after school class is to give students a shot at
being in a band and to experience the thrill of performing REAL songs for
people. In fact, if you know anybody with band equipment that they would be willing to
donate, or let us use for 10 weeks, please let me know. Students who have their
own instruments will be encouraged to bring theirs each week.

Our auditions will be next Friday, September 26th in the Multi Purpose Room
starting at 2:30 p.m. Each child will need to come with some song, or part of a
song that they will be sharing their skills with. If your child does not make
the first session, we will be having another rock band session in the spring.
More details will be coming soon. All students who are interested should be
encouraged to come, even if they have never even played before. The main thing
we will be looking for is rhythm and students who will practice, practice and
then practice some more.

Please e-mail me if you would like your child to participate in the auditions
and we can go from there. Specify which instrument they will play....Vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass or drums. Choose wisely parents.... You
just might have a band in your garage in a couple months ;>)

Dear Parents,

Rio del Mar Elementary School's After School Program will begin on Monday, August 18th. Our program will run from 2:05 – 4:25 p.m. On Wednesdays the program will run until 2:05 p.m. The primary purpose of this program is to help students with homework and provide academic support and interventions for students that are falling behind grade level standards.

The program will continue to consist of an hour of tutorial/homework support. If your child completes all of their homework they will participate in an hour of enrichment activities to support student learning. Students are to be honest regarding finishing their homework. If they are not, they will lose fun enrichment class opportunities for two weeks. Enrichment activities will consist of: Sports Leagues, Music, Guitar, Computers, Piano, Chess, Ceramics, Arts and Crafts, Actor's Theater, African Drumming, Games and more! Rio’s After School is an open enrollment program and this means that your child may come any day we are in session.

*For those students who take the bus: there will be a free after school bus that will pick up the students at 4:15 p.m. There will be no Watsonville stops this year and the last stop will be in La Selva. If you have a transportation problem/concern please call: 728-6324.

**Please remember to pick up your child promptly each day at 4:15 p.m. After three warnings for getting picked up late, your child will be required to take the free after school bus home.

*There will be no after school program on Fridays or during Parent/Teacher Conferences in October. Snacks and drinks will be provided each day.

*When school begins, please send a check for $220 for each child to attend Rio’s After School Program. If you prefer, you may send $110 now and $110 after winter break. This fee helps pay for a Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, staff, supplies, curriculum, books, equipment, prizes and much more. Scholarships are available for students in need. This one time fee is a small sum compared to the hundreds of dollars you would pay at other programs each month. Checks are preferred and they should be made out to the RDM Parent Alliance.

Dear Parents,
Our program will begin on Monday, August 18th. There will be a couple of changes in regards to the busing at Rio Del Mar. The program will end and the bus will leave at 4:15 p.m. instead of 4:25 p.m. We had to make this change in order to keep the free bus. Also, there will be no more bus stops in Watsonville. A more detailed post about our program will be coming soon. The after school sign-up letter will be sent home the first week of school.

AFTER SCHOOL UPDATE

Dear Parents,
After the state funding allocations for our hourly program were released and the district came up with their budget for our program, our site's budget was CUT by one third. Furthermore, the governor will be cutting over 4 billion dollars for education which will result in a 10% cut in our district. This is disappointing but I have done everything possible to make cuts without losing our Monday - Thursday program. As a result, we will need to make a couple adjustments to meet our new budget. First, we will have charge a small fee for some of the enrichment classes that we provide. For example, Guitar, Drumming, Ceramics, Introduction to Theater, and Piano. In addition, we will need to ask for a donation of $110 to cover the second half of the year starting in January. Thank you for your understanding and support for this valuable program.

GUITAR ENRICHMENT-Feb. 20th - May 1st

Rio del Mar’s After School Program will be offering a new enrichment class entitled Introduction to Guitar on Tuesdays. Mr. Sweet will be teaching this class in Room 12. This class will be free because of the generous parent donations to our program. This class will be open to the first ten 4th – 6th grade students who return this form to Mr. Sweet in Room 12 with their parent’s permission. This class has limited enrollment because teaching guitar requires a smaller class in order to maximize our time. This class is a 10–week course, so attendance each Tuesday is a requirement. Otherwise, students on the waiting list will fill-in the available slots after two absences.

• Dates – Tuesdays starting in the February 20th through May 1st.

• Times – 3:30 – 4:25 p.m.

Description – This class will be an experiential guitar class consisting of guitar fundamentals, playing chords, singing and a lot of fun. I will be sharing my experience in playing guitar and how important is to me. Sign up and you may become the future Jimi Hendrix!

Rio del Mar is pleased to have Christopher Wohlters, a Spectra Artist, returning again as an after school enrichment teacher. He will be teaching a new class called Exploration of Theatre. A letter should have been sent home to the 4th - 6th graderson Thursday, February 1st. This new enrichment course will be offered as a free class due to the generous donations made by parents this year. However, this class will be offered to only 20 students who will sign up for a 10 - week class on Tuesdays starting 2/6 and going through 4/17. The first 20 students who turn in their permission slips to Room 12 will be registered in the class.

Dear Parents,

---Many of you are having a difficult time finding your child when you pick them up. This is probably a very frustrating situation, especially after working all day long! Our program is wonderful because it gives students the opportunity to choose what enrichment class they would like to attend during the second hour. However, the problem arises when children do not tell their parents, in advance, which class they will be attending.
This dilemma can be averted if you check the website beforehand, and decide which class your child will go to each day. I know you love touring our beautiful school, but this will help expedite the process of picking up your children in a timely manner.

---Please remember that Rio del Mar's After School Program ends on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:25 p.m. On Wednesdays students go home at 2:00 p.m. Please pick them up promptly at this time. If this is not possible, your child may take the free after school bus home.

---Good news! I recently met with Joe Trautwein, the Director of Extending Learning, who generates funding for our program. He gave our program expansion the final green light. This means 2nd through 6th graders will be able to attend each day our program is in session.

---The state is still ironing out the final details for the implementation of Propostion 49. I will keep you posted when I receive details of the grant.

---I am in the process of getting a cell phone for the after school program. This will give you an emergency contact when the office staff goes home.

After School Update

Rio del Mar's Free After School Program will be expanding for the upcoming 2006-2007 school year! Our program will be starting on Monday, August 21st and will run Monday through Thursdays, as in previous years. In addition, parents will be pleased to know that this year we will be opening up the program to include grades 2nd through 6th each day. In the past we did not provide after school support for 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesday and Thursdays. On Wednesdays we did not provide for 4th, 5th and 6th grades. At the beginning of the year on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, the program will run from 2:05 p.m. to 4:25 p.m. On Wednesdays the program will be open from 12:05 - 2:05 p.m. This is the same amount of time we have ended the program in years past.

This program expansion is contingent upon the funds from Proposition 49 being released. If this funding is not allocated to our site, the program may revert to what we have offered in the past. The grant also requires our site to average 80 students per day. Consequently, if we do not meet this requirement, we may not receive the grant in upcoming years. At the beginning of the school year I will be updating this blog to keep you informed of any changes. Furthermore, various enrichment classes will be offered throughout the year. These enrichment classes will include: Chess, Arts and Crafts, Dancing, Ceramics, Sports, Acting, African Drumming, Computers and possibly more.
